A piece of Tony Stark’s helmet modelled for “Iron Man week” on the Irish Sketch Society. Looks like curtains for this particular suit model…

How the image in the post below was created, with a bit of a jump (granted) from Mudbox to the final render in VRay!

Obligatory alien head sculpt…

This is an almost abandoned alien head sculpt I did to try out the timelapse viewport capture in Mudbox, I’ll post the video when I can get it cleaned up. Sculpted from the base head mesh and rendered in Max. I messed around with materials on it for a while and decided it might be worth working on a little further. It had to be done!

I worked on this over three lunchtimes this week as a submission for the Irish Sketch Society’s Leprechaun week! I also submitted an earlier image which i wasn’t too happy with, I think I can do some more with this one though. Beannachtaí Lá Fhéile Phádraig daoibh go léir!

More Bats…

Two more treatments of my Batman sculpt for the Irish Sketch Society on Facebook, this time taking some cues from Batman: The Animated Series and some of the glitchy low poly stuff I like to play with. Enjoyed this!

The Irish Sketch Society…

•March 9, 2013 • 4 Comments

I noticed that some artist mates on Facebook had been posting to a new page called the Irish Sketch Society where this week’s theme is “Batman”. I must admit he’s an old favourite of mine so despite feeling very poorly on Friday, I forced myself to spend my lunch hour speed sculpting this bust from the Mudbox base head mesh to submit to the page. I also spent about 40 minutes today messing with contrast and colour correction in Photoshop on the final image. He’s not from the same universe as the Joker model I was sculpting but I think his demeanour is in keeping with the dark and brooding nature of the hero Gotham deserves…

Hats off…

I’ve been jumping back on forth on a few bits of art the past few weeks as the mood took me because hey, it’s MY blog and I can change it up whenever I like, right? So, the more I’ve looked at my old man head sculpt I’ve been chipping away at, the more he reminded me of someone. I decided to make some headgear for him and see if what I’m thinking pans out well as an image. The image below has the wireframe helmet model and some renders from VRay. I modelled the helmet, called a morion, using splines and the surface modifier in 3DSMax, then taking it into Mudbox to add wear and tarnish. The renders below are a material test only, I’ll be heading back into Mudbox to do some painting now that I have some material settings I’m happy with.

Here’s another lunchtime doodle I’m working up in Mudbox. Usually I stay away from the dodgy NPR filter but I guess for cartoon and comic looks it could work on a character like this! This particular version of the Joker is based off a general shape from Batman: The Animated Series and worked over with some detailing of my own. I haven’t done anything with the eyes yet but there is more to come…

These images are composed from direct screen grabs from Mudbox and put together in Photoshop.
