Out with the Old…

The first post of 2014, again, inspired by the current theme set by the Irish Sketch Society, “Old Fashioned Portraits”. The image of a hooded figure was influenced by the spirit photography popular in the late 19th century and also by early ghost photos- something about the ever present hooded figures in robes always gives me the chills. I had been experimenting with Vray fur and used it here to add some extra shagginess to the hood and robes, which I had draped using cloth in 3DSMax. There is very little detail in the face area, what features are there are largely painted in using Photoshop, where I also blurred detail and layered up the wear and tear.

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2013 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

The concert hall at the Sydney Opera House holds 2,700 people. This blog was viewed about 21,000 times in 2013. If it were a concert at Sydney Opera House, it would take about 8 sold-out performances for that many people to see it.

I did a piece this week for the Irish Sketch Society Comic week, I was messing about with some Batman and Joker bust sculpts, I decimated them, tesselated them, retopologised and resculpted them and then put them together in a 3dsmax file for posing. After rendering off a few passes and compositing them in Photoshop onto a Detective Comics image I found on the internet it looked like this:

Why decimate (reduce polys) and then tesselate (add polys) you might ask? I’ve found if you strip a sculpted model down to something very low poly, preserving only the most important details and then tesselate in Max you can get some very interesting shading results from the geometry, which can provide some nice results when rendering for a comic or cartoony style. The resulting geometry can be triangulated and messy, so I did retopologise it in ZBrush and sculpted over that a little. The first test looked like this and in some ways I prefer it to the finished piece:

Here is a breakdown of some of the passes used, fairly straightforward apart from the ink and contours pass, which I used to mask off the crosshatch effect:

Colour version of the vampire speed sculpt from last week, the usual mix of 3dsmax, Mudbox and VRay. I removed the blood from the black and white version, it was a bit icky for this image.

Hallowe’en ’13…

This week is Hallowe’en and the theme is Monsters over on the Irish Sketch Society’s page. I have some ideas, the first of which I lashed out today at lunchtime with some cleanup this evening. I saw a lad on the train this morning who had a beard and haircut just like this! petemcnally_blog_art_ISS_Monsters2Modelled in 3dsmax, rendered in VRay with a little sculpting in Mudbox.

Pixelled out…

This is the last of the pixel art for a while. Probably! Here’s the scene setup for my Sword and Sworcery tribute – simple studio style backdrop, a VRay dome light and an area light for illumination. Each box outlined in red represents a pixel, and there is a slight bevel on the front faces to catch the light. I used a cool little app called PIX3LED with a shout out to this guy and this guy who made it, that converts a pixel art gif into 3d geometry then lit and rendered the scene in VRay.petemcnally_pixel_art-02setup

The image below was a quick mess around at lunchtime in work based off a Deadpool sculpt I had been working on previously, although you couldn’t tell from the final render.

Been a while since that last mech post, still tipping away on it but haven’t been doing much personal art stuff of late, I sorta lost the muse the last two months but I think it’s coming back now. I’m also putting together some new game art workshops and should have some news very soon. Here’s some pixel art I did for this weeks Irish Sketch Society. This was just some fun really, it is based on my first Zbrush sculpt (which, when finished, will be a Native American chief) and rendered in 3dsmax with some touch ups in Photoshop.
