Fake Plastic Men…

I missed out on a blog post in May,  I took a holiday to Italy and have been busy with other stuff. I did get to some more 3D printing, some of it more successful than other attempts. First up was a revised version of my Joker fan art, this time a more substantial piece with further hair detailing and a proper torso modelled, his trademark purple suit from Batman: The Animated Series. Unfortunately due to some bad booleans, the printer left out his collar, bowtie and lapels, leaving a rather gruesome looking scar across his neck, like the memento of some failed assassination attempt at Arkham Asylum.

I decided I’d try for something a little more elaborate than the suit and started researching straightjackets, one of which I created in Marvelous Designer over a rough pose of the stock male body model from Mudbox. I worked over it in ZBrush to create some deeper folds and seams and after some remeshing and decimation it was ready to hit the Ultimaker, here is the result…

I’ve never been much good at painting, but I’ve acquired a compressor and airbrush set, all I need now is some free time to try and paint up the print.

Adventures with Ultimaker…

I’ve been experimenting a lot with the Ultimaker 2 in work, hopping on whenever it’s free to try out various models that I *thought* wouldn’t require much conforming. Some of them can take a while to clean up, make watertight, remove self-intersections, thicken areas that are too thin – basically make STL compliant. The results haven’t been perfect but I’m learning as I go, might even get around to trying some model painting sometime soon.

The wolves are a version of the model from the last post, one was printed before the hood was added. Unfortunately the bonnet had to be solidified and in places was too thin to print and the head had to be booleaned into it, less than ideal and it printed quite raggedy in places. The batarang was pretty quick to model, built in two parts with a hinge in the middle to allow folding, but due to some of the overhangs in the bevels, it only printed well on one side.

What Big Teeth…

I was looking through the back catalog for some models to 3D print and came across this lad. It looked a bit bland and considering the time it takes to print I thought I’d model a hood and make it an homage to Little Red Riding Hood. After much mesh editing I couldn’t quite get the cloth thick enough to print without making huge compromises to the model so I said I’d render it off instead and call the experience a learning process. Here it is rendered in V-Ray:

I was setting up the scene in V-Ray for a nice turntable movie, but for speed instead I took it into Marmoset Toolbag 2 and set up some quick materials  and ran off a clip from it, which you can see here:

Out of the virtual…

I’ve had this model knocking around for ages, I’ve overused it on this blog but we got a 3D printer in work and I thought I’d run it off, see how it would fare. The print software flagged some potential issues with the nose and eyebrows, possibly too much overhang for the printer to cope with sufficiently so I added some support structures to help fidelity.jokermodel

I just ran with the printer defaults, this was a much a learning process as anything.

Start and end of the print, support struts are still attached at this point

End result with struts removed, a little rough around the edges, and the tip of the nose is lost but I’m happy with it for a first print.

January Lost…

•February 16, 2015 • 2 Comments

First post of the New Year, my hand is finally healing after an accident last December and I’m starting to get the itch to make stuff again. This one is more technical and abstract in nature but I’ve got to start somewhere! Pretty busy until after GDC but I’m hoping to make up for a lost January in the coming months.

2014 in review

This will be my only post for a while due to a hand injury. Hoping that 2015 will be accident free for everyone!

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2014 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

The concert hall at the Sydney Opera House holds 2,700 people. This blog was viewed about 34,000 times in 2014. If it were a concert at Sydney Opera House, it would take about 13 sold-out performances for that many people to see it.

These images are the results of some experiments with some image based Delaunay triangulation. 3D models rendered off, Photoshopped and put through DMesh.
